Introduction

Embarking on a new needle felting project is always an exciting thing filled with endless possibilities. In this particular project, I’m thrilled to start the challenge of creating a lifelike needle felted tiger using advanced needle felting techniques.

It’s a large project and will require some learning along the way. I’m all for embracing a mindset of learning. It opens up a world of possibilities, nurtures creativity and helps refine skills.

Over my many years of felting, I’ve learnt from books, the internet but not in person. All the skills I have, have been self-taught, trying things and learning through trial and error.

However, I would love to attend an in-person workshop with all the benefits that go with it, creating with like-minded people, fun, inspiration and working on mindset. I tried to book onto one, recently but missed out due to a bad internet connection!

I’ve been keeping my eyes open for something else that appeals, that’s a bit more challenging and have been following an amazing needle felting artist, Tracey Turner from Birdie and Blossom and this tiger project is her design.

So, let’s get back to telling you about how I went about making this glorious needle felted tiger.

Armed with the versatile carded wool slivers as my primary material, I will use a range of high-performing felting needles, including a 36G triangular needle for the base shape, a 40G spiral needle for firming up the structure, and a 42G triangular needle for adding intricate details. Before delving into the felting process, it is imperative to conduct thorough research and study the anatomy and features of tigers.

Understanding The Facial Features For Your Needle Felted Tiger

A successful needle felting project begins with a deep understanding of the subject’s unique facial features. By meticulously examining numerous photographs of tigers from different angles, with a particular focus on their eyes and distinctive coat markings, you can develop an intimate familiarity with the subject matter. This research is invaluable, as it enables the creation of realistic and accurate features during the needle felting process.

Step-by-Step Instructions for a needle felted tiger

Creating the Head

The initial step involves shaping a ball of core wool to form the tiger’s head. This ball acts as the foundation for all subsequent features and must be felted to a medium firmness. Taking ample time to ensure a solid and stable base is essential for achieving the overall structure of the tiger’s head.

Adding Facial Features

a. Muzzle: Shape a tube using wool and carefully attach it to the base of the head to form the muzzle.
b. Nose: Attach a flat piece of felt to the front of the muzzle, ensuring its proportionality and alignment with the tiger’s facial structure.
c. Jowls: Add two small pouches of wool to define the jowls, paying close attention to their placement and shape.
d. Tip of the Nose: Employ a triangular piece of wool to create the tip of the nose, adding depth and realism to the face.

Firming Up and Shaping

Once all the facial features are in place, spend time to firming them up and shaping them meticulously. This step is crucial in establishing a firm surface that can support the top coat and accentuate the desired definition.

Needle Felted Eyes

To achieve lifelike eyes, I opt for felting them instead of using acrylic beads or resorting to painting techniques. I start by using a dark base felt ball, which I then cut in half to form each eye. By felting each half into its designated position, I ensure proper alignment and symmetry. Next, I add a base colour that closely resembles the natural eye colour of a tiger. To enhance the iris, I incorporate recycled sari silk, which adds depth and a subtle shine. I then add the pupil, glint, and any necessary reflections, consistently checking for symmetry and realism.

Adding Markings To The Needle Felted Tiger

With the aid of the reference photographs, I meticulously add the distinctive markings to the tiger’s face. By paying particular attention to the placement and shape of each marking, I ensure that the final result exudes authenticity and captivates viewers with its visual appeal.

The addition of ears is best reserved for a later stage when the head has been securely attached to the body. Careful positioning and attachment of the ears to the tiger’s head and neck are paramount in achieving a realistic appearance. I’ll cover all of this in another blog.
