These two lovable pups, from the same litter, have been by my side since they were eight weeks old. Wherever I go, they follow, casting their dog-shaped shadows and spreading joy. They even join me during my creative process and make appearances at my events, offering cuddles and creating a calming atmosphere. Attendees of my workshops always look forward to meeting them!
As faithful and affectionate family dogs, Dolly and Daisy bring immense joy and love into our lives. They are great watch dogs and have an energetic nature. They love running and spending time outdoors, always getting easily distracted by the scent of small creatures. Dolly has a chilled and zen-like nature, radiating calmness wherever she goes. On the other hand, Daisy is a bundle of excitement, always eager to be a part of any crowd. Their contrasting personalities make them an inseparable duo and a constant source of inspiration for my artwork.
About three years ago, I embarked on the journey of creating a needle felted artwork that captured the essence of my beautiful girls. I wanted to incorporate their fur into the piece, using the magical technique of needle felting. Needle felting is an art form that involves transforming wool into beautiful creations using a barbed needle. The barbs on the needle catch the wool fibres, binding them together to create felt. Creation Starts of The Dolly & Daisy Needle Felted dog Portrait
The process of creating the Dolly and Daisy portrait began with sketching out the design on the felt background. However, due to the demands of my full-time job at the time, the portrait was left unfinished and tucked away in a cupboard. It wasn’t until five months ago that I rediscovered the design and felt a burning desire to complete it. I immersed myself in the process, blending colours and bringing the portrait to life.
Choosing The Right Wool Colours And Blending
Witnessing the transformation of humble wool into something amazing using just a needle is truly fascinating. Working with the brown fur of Dolly and Daisy presented a challenge. Achieving definition and proper shading required blending different coloured wools. Although my wool stash had limited colours, I managed to expand the palette by blending and incorporating browns, greys, black, cream, and hints of orange, pink, and rust into the picture.
Achieving Likeness and That Realistic Effect To A Needle Felted Dog Portrait
The most challenging part of the process was achieving a lifelike 3D effect and getting the shading right. Adding the speckled cream top coat took considerable time and effort, but the end result was immensely satisfying. Throughout the process, I dedicated countless hours to refining the piece, experimenting with colours, and ensuring proper proportions. At times, I had to step back and view the artwork from a distance to gain a fresh perspective.
