As a needle felting artist deeply inspired by the natural world, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a cornerstone of my creative process. In this blog, and the accompanying video where I share my thoughts, I delve into how sustainability is woven into the fabric of my art, ensuring that each piece not only captivates but also conserves.
Why Sustainability?
For me, sustainability means responsibility—towards our environment, our resources, and our future. It’s about making art that respects the planet that inspires it. Needle felting offers a unique platform for this, as it inherently values minimal waste and emphasises the use of natural materials.
Sustainable Materials in Needle Felting Art
My needle felting art projects are crafted from 100% natural wool, a renewable resource that biodegrades much faster than synthetic fibres. By choosing suppliers who prioritise animal welfare and environmentally friendly practices, I ensure that the wool not only brings warmth and texture to my creations but also stands as a testament to ethical artistry.
The Needle Felting Art Creative Process
In the video below, I talk about the boundless creativity that each person holds and how we can all tap into this to create something beautiful and meaningful and that there is no right or wrong way, just what feels right for each individual.
My needle felting process starts with curiosity when I’m out and about on my daily walks with my 2 dogs, Dolly & Daisy. This then sparks a simple idea, more often than not inspired by the nature I encounter—a leaf pattern or mossy patches observed during that walk, or the intricate colours of a bird I spot. It allows me to use my mind to think about how to use the wool and experiment to recreate what I have seen.
My needle felting art allows me to relax my mind, as well as an outlet to keeping my hands busy, a connection between the mind and hands to create something beautiful. Being in that flow, when time virtually stands still, whilst you create is a special thing and even more so when I’m able to pass this on to others in my teachings, both in person and online and being able to show that everyone is creative, is such a joy.
Each needle felting project is an opportunity to infuse sustainability into my work. I often use leftover wool from previous projects to ensure there’s no waste. Even the smallest scraps can be used to add details and textures to new pieces, highlighting the versatility and eco-friendliness of needle felting.

To be able to take a humble product that is wool and use a specialist barbed needle felting needle to create a wide range of things from tiny to a lot bigger, there really are no limits to what’s possible in needle felting. The only limits is our own imagination and the restrictions we put on ourselves and from what you’ve been told previously.

Pushing my Own Boundaries In My Needle Felting Art
My exotic bird art collection came about as I wanted to expand, experiment and see how far I could push my skills and capabilities within needle felting.
Why exotic birds?
To explore colour, textures and how I could achieve that with wool.
The collection allowed me to explore different mediums and experiment as this is the best way we learn, I developed all of my skill through experimentation.
My art has developed so much from where I started 12 years and ago with many failures along the way but I celebrate those failures, they’re a testament to how far I’ve come.
And the beauty about needle felting is that if you don’t like something, you can cut or rip bits off, that you don’t like and start again, it’s not final.
